At SPT Labtech, our mission is to accelerate scientific breakthroughs, but behind every innovation is a team of incredible individuals. With Positive People, we’re shining a spotlight on the diverse, passionate, and talented people who make it all happen. From engineers to customer support, from the lab to the field, our teams are driving impact across the globe. What inspires them? What does their work mean for our customers and the future of science? Stay tuned as we bring you personal insights, career journeys, and the human stories behind the job titles.
What’s your name, role, and where are you based?
We're the FAS team in China: Amber, Hank, and Ray in Shanghai, and Liang in Beijing. We connect customer needs with the right tech solutions, focusing on tailored support for life science labs across the country.
How long have you been with SPT Labtech?
Amber’s been with the company for over five years. Hank brings deep sequencing knowledge; Liang has a background in synthetic biology—both joined two years ago. Our newest teammate, Ray, adds strong IVD experience. What are your main responsibilities, and a typical day look like for you?
A typical day might involve delivering hands-on training sessions to client staff on instrument and software operations, troubleshooting technical challenges customers encounter with existing equipment. We may also collaborate with clients to co-develop customized applications and protocols, or hold internal cross-functional meetings with R&D and sales teams to align product roadmaps with market demands.
Through these interactions, we translate frontline insights into actionable inputs for product enhancements and next-generation solutions!
What’s something about your job that people might not realize?
We do more than support, we enable. Staying ahead means constantly learning new science and sharpening our tech skills. A good example: we helped miniaturize a 10x NGS library prep workflow on firefly, turning a major challenge into a practical solution through teamwork and iteration.
Behind the scenes, we invest countless hours in researching cutting-edge scientific knowledge and honing technical expertise. This demands not only mastery of the instruments and software we support, but also a deep grasp of foundational principles and applications across genomics, proteomics, drug discovery, and structural biology.
What drives you in your role and is the most rewarding part of your job?
We believe in "technology empowers science." Tools like firefly®, dragonfly®, and mosquito® streamline complex lab tasks, freeing scientists to focus on real discovery. When a client told us their throughput jumped 8x, costs dropped 80%, and the whole workflow was handled by one person—that was incredibly rewarding.
How does your work impact your colleagues and/or customers?
Internally, we conduct internal sales training sessions for our teams, covering the latest technologies in domestic and international markets, updates on R&D progress from our UK headquarters, and driving cross-departmental collaboration (e.g., seeking support from UK R&D teams and providing feedback on current experimental advancements in the Chinese market to accelerate the implementation of 10x miniaturized library preparation workflows in the NGS field).
Externally, by shortening the customer journey from "equipment procurement" to "results delivery," we enhance client throughput, reduce delivery timelines and library preparation costs, directly accelerating progress in precision medicine and drug development.
What’s been your proudest moment at SPT Labtech?
One of our proudest milestones was enabling Majorbio to implement a dual-plate 384-well 10x miniaturized library prep solution, establishing a strategic partnership in the process. Equally impactful, we replicated this success with Personalbio, empowering them to achieve higher-quality sequencing results at reduced costs and enhanced efficiency—gaining a decisive competitive edge.
These achievements not only deliver tangible value to clients, but also showcase our team’s technical expertise in translating complex workflows into scalable, market-ready solutions.
Which of the Strategic Pillars / Goals do you think you impact the most and why?
Definitely Commercial Capability with a Customer-Centric mindset. We deal with over 100 client requests a week, so we’re in tune with what’s needed, from handling viscous liquids to integrating new tech into genomics workflows. That direct input helps evolve platforms like firefly®.
How does your team or role contribute to the company’s success?
We're a behind-the-scenes driver of revenue. By improving customer experience and product use, we boost adoption and market presence. Our insights also shape better tools—like firefly®, which has seen major uptake in China thanks to our support. If you had to describe your job in one word, what would it be?
Collaborative. We build close relationships with clients and work tightly with internal teams. That teamwork fuels fast, effective innovation—from concept to real-world impact.
How does your background or culture influence the way you work?
We value openness, inclusion, and team spirit. Everyone's voice matters, and that drives fresh ideas and smart solutions. It helps us design world-class automation that truly makes a difference.
What’s something outside of work that you’re passionate about?
Outside of work, our team members embrace diverse passions—from sports and music to art and travel. These activities not only help us unwind and alleviate stress but also strengthen team cohesion and enrich our lives. Beyond recreation, these shared experiences inspire creativity in our work, sparking fresh ideas and perspectives.
What excites you about the future of your role?
Genomics is the future, NGS has the advantage of higher throughput, faster speed and lower cost, and the explosive growth of single cell and spatial omics is exciting! The future of our role is also exciting due to the continuous development of life science research and the increasing demand for laboratory automation.
We look forward to seeing more innovative products and technologies from SPT Labtech and the opportunity to work with customers to explore new applications and solve more complex problems, making a greater contribution to accelerating life science research.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone looking to join SPT Labtech, what would it be?
"Stay curious, embrace complexity." We are driven by a passion for life sciences research and a strong desire to learn and innovate. At SPT Labtech—a company that prioritizes innovation and customer-centric service—adapting to evolving market demands and client requirements is paramount.
