With Field Application Scientist Kyle Kisor

Kyle Headshot (1)What do you do at SPT Labtech?

Kyle Kisor is a Field Application Scientist covering the West Coast of the United States, including Northern California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado. He supports customers throughout the region by coordinating demos, assisting with pre-sales discussions, providing on-site training, and helping develop workflows for existing users. With the Bay Area as his main hub, Kyle is able to stay closely connected to a fast-moving scientific community.

How did your path lead you here?

Kyle completed his PhD at the University of California, San Francisco, where he studied how pH regulates protein function, particularly how transcription factors locate and bind their DNA targets. During his graduate work, he developed a strong interest in technology, genomics, and science communication.

Realising he enjoyed working across a broad range of scientific topics rather than focusing on a single niche, Kyle was drawn to the Field Application Scientist role. SPT Labtech allows him to use his deep scientific training while engaging with diverse research areas, supporting multiple labs, and applying his problem-solving skills in an impactful, hands-on way.

What’s a typical day like?

Kyle’s day-to-day is a mix of collaboration, customer support, and on-the-ground problem-solving. His time is usually spent in team meetings, discussing ideas and troubleshooting with colleagues, followed by customer emails, workflow planning and answering scientific questions.

He also spends time visiting labs for demos, checking in with nearby customers (many just a short drive away), and building customised protocols and workflows to help teams get the most out of their systems. The variety, and the chance to pop between multiple cutting-edge labs in a single day, keeps things exciting.

What’s the best part of your job?

For Kyle, it’s all about the variety and human connection. He loves that each day at SPT Labtech offers something new. New people, new science and new problems to solve. He has a natural drive for problem-solving and finds it incredibly rewarding to tackle a challenge, find a solution, and move forward to the next discovery.

Making a difference at SPT Labtech

Kyle’s desire to make an impact is rooted in personal experience. Motivated from a young age by family health issues, he wanted to understand how science could help uncover answers, and eventually help others.

Today, he sees his role as enabling many different scientific journeys at once. By supporting a wide range of projects and helping labs overcome technical barriers. Being even a small part of that forward momentum is deeply meaningful to him.

What do you get up to outside of work?

Outside the lab, Kyle enjoys staying active and exploring the outdoors. He loves winter sports like snowboarding, heading to the mountains, camping and spending time outside whenever he can. He’s also a big fan of going to the movies, road trips (often back home to see family in Los Angeles), and cooking.
