With Field Application Scientist Adam Hall

Adam Hall- HeadshotWhat do you do at SPT Labtech?

Adam Hall is a Field Application Scientist supporting customers across the East Coast of the United States, primarily in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut, with additional coverage around the Boston area. In his role, Adam delivers firefly demos and training, supports mosquito and dragonfly platforms, troubleshoots applications, and works closely with TMs to help customers successfully implement automated workflows.

How did your path lead you here?

Adam’s scientific journey began in the UK, where he studied Pharmacology as an undergraduate at the University of Cambridge. He went on to complete a PhD at Imperial College London, focusing on molecular neuropharmacology and electrophysiology.

After moving to the US, Adam completed a postdoc in Western Massachusetts before transitioning into industry. His career has spanned application science, genomics, neuroscience, education and leadership roles, including work at Axon Instruments, LifeCanvas Technologies (where he led Scientific Affairs), and the creation of a regulatory testing lab built from the ground up.

With extensive experience in both academia and industry, and a long-standing interest in automation and user-friendly technologies, Adam was drawn to SPT Labtech’s tight integration of software and hardware, and the accessibility of its platforms.

What’s a typical day like?

Adam spends much of his time spent on the road delivering firefly® demos and training sessions across the East Coast. He works closely with colleagues in the field to set up systems, troubleshoot applications, and support customer projects.

When not travelling, Adam spends his time developing protocols, responding to customer queries, and collaborating with kit manufacturers, including work with partners such as 10x Genomics, QIAGEN and Takara. He’s also involved in protocol development projects with major research organisations, helping tailor workflows to real-world lab needs.

What’s the best part of your job?

For Adam, the most rewarding aspect of the role is interacting with scientists at the forefront of research. He enjoys learning about new fields, particularly NGS, and thrives on the challenge of expanding his knowledge into new areas.

The opportunity to engage with cutting-edge science, combined with the chance to apply his background in pharmacology, imaging and automation, makes the role both intellectually stimulating and deeply engaging.

Making a difference at SPT Labtech

Adam sees automation as a key driver of accuracy, consistency and efficiency in modern research. He’s excited by SPT Labtech’s pace of innovation and its commitment to making advanced automation accessible to scientists.

Equally important to him is the company culture. Adam values the strong sense of collaboration, openness and shared knowledge across teams, qualities he believes are essential in a fast-moving and technically demanding field. Together, these elements allow SPT Labtech to support customers effectively while continuously pushing scientific innovation forward.

What do you get up to outside of work?

Outside of work, Adam enjoys spending time outdoors, hiking and exploring lakes, rivers and coastlines across New England. He’s an avid kayaker (with a growing collection of them), enjoys walking his dog, and loves living in rural Massachusetts surrounded by nature.

He’s also a keen reader, particularly drawn to fantasy and magical realism as a form of escapism, and enjoys spending time with his grown-up children in Boston and New York when his travels allow.
