Field Application Scientist
What do you do at SPT Labtech?Federica Falconio is an Associate Field Application Scientist at SPT Labtech. She helps customers integrate automated technologies into their workflows, from pre-sales discussions and hands-on training to ongoing scientific support. Federica also represents SPT Labtech at conferences, showcasing the latest innovations and connecting with scientists across the community.
Originally from Rome, where Federica obtained her BSc in Biotechnology and MSc in Genetics & Molecular Biology. After working at Cancer Research UK, Federica moved to London to complete a PhD at Imperial College, focusing on epigenetics in sleep regulation, using Drosophila. Transitioning from academia to industry was a challenge she embraced, she wanted to apply her scientific knowledge in a new way and help others benefit from automation in the lab.
No two days are ever the same! Some weeks Federica is travelling to customer sites to run demos and training sessions; other days she’s working remotely, writing protocols, supporting users online, or enjoying a well-earned cup of tea while catching up on emails. The mix of lab visits, problem-solving, and learning new things keeps her role exciting and varied.
Federica loves that she is still closely connected to science. She gets to learn about cutting-edge research, meet scientists from diverse backgrounds, and explore new techniques. The mix of continuous learning, teaching others, and building relationships makes this role incredibly rewarding.
Automation truly transforms the way labs work, improving consistency, speeding up workflows, and reducing human error. It’s rewarding to show scientists how these tools can elevate their research quality. Federica is especially proud of how intuitive our software is, making advanced automation accessible to everyone, not just those with programming experience.
Creative and curious, Federica enjoys painting and drawing, a hobby she discovered during lockdown and still makes time for. She also plays the piano, travels with her husband (Peru has been their favourite destination so far!), and spends time with friends who have become like family in London.
