To register new vials using the Client application requires a PC with a 2D barcode reader installed (though this is not required if the Client is only to be used to monitor the vial list and lab2lab status). SPT Labtech will usually supply barcode readers which are extremely simple to use. They connect to the PC's USB port (full size USB 2 or above) and do not require any additional software. Once connected, the PC treats them as if they were a normal keyboard: when a vial’s barcode is scanned it is exactly as if the digits had been manually typed in. If desired, any other type of 2D barcode reader could be used instead.
